Soul Cakes – Halloween, What Our Parents Didn’t Tell Us! Last Replay

Let’s Take It To The WORLD

Soul Cakes Are Thought To Be The First Treats For Tricks

Halloween is a strange holiday. Frivolous and playful, yet it’s a day driven by a dark spirit — the time to embrace all things eerie and supernatural, haunted and creepy. Death and its minions are no stranger to Oct. 31.

soul cake is a small round cake which is traditionally made for All Hallows’ EveAll Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day to commemorate the dead in the Christian tradition. The cakes, often simply referred to as souls, are given out to soulers, mainly consisting of children and the poor; who go from door to door during the days of All hallow tide singing and saying prayers for the dead. The practice of giving and eating soul cakes continues in some countries today.

All Souls’ Eve and All Souls’ Day, and soul cakes came into existence — but when and where aren’t exactly clear. Some suggest that treats were made for the bonfires and were a form of ill-fated lottery; he who selects the burnt cake becomes the human sacrifice ensuring bountiful crops the following year. Others say that the cakes were scattered around to mollify evil spirits condemned to exist in the form of animals.

Soul cakes are generally presented as a small round cake, variously spiced, often studded across the top with a cross of currants. They are part scone, part biscuit, part teacake — and a sweet little treat harkening back to the times when souls roamed this realm and Halloween was truly a haunted night.

The Soul Cake Song

A soul! a soul! a soul-cake!
Please good Missis, a soul-cake!
An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry
Any good thing to make us all merry.
One for Peter, two for Paul
Three for Him who made us all.

The Trick or Treat Song

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat

Give me something good to eat.

Let’s Take It To The WORLD

In much of the Western world, the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Canada, Halloween is observed and celebrated on October the 31st. With increasing popularity in Australia and New Zealand.

Carved pumpkins, dancing skeletons, witches and ghost stand out among all of the other holidays we observe. Full of ghost stories, pranks and elaborate costumes and crazy games. It has become a mixture of secular (non religious) and religious elements

It has brought on controversy between Christian groups and the Modern-day Wiccans (the cult or people that practice of witchcraft).

I will discuss two different origins of Halloween.

As an Ancient Celtic festival called Samhain and a Christian festival now called Halloween.
